The White House Presents: The Media Image of Barack Obama
Seidlová, Kristýna ; Jirák, Jan (advisor) ; Zezulková, Markéta (referee)
The diploma thesis The White House Presents: The Media Image of Barack Obama examines the media presentation of the President of the United States, Barack Obama, through the official media channel of the White House. Five video recordings of President Obama's speeches are analyzed with a focus on linguistic, visual and auditory sign systems with the use of the qualitative semiotic content analysis. Before the analysis itself, an explanation of theoretical terms related mostly to the representation of reality is provided. On these grounds the analysis is then approached as a description of different means of achieving media construction of reality, to which both the President himself and the White House Office of Communications contribute. This Office is in charge of the content of the above-mentioned channel. To broaden the context, general information about the functioning of the President's media communication is included. The aim of this thesis is an interpretation of the communication tools presented by the White House media channel and the analysis of their symbolic meaning in order to explicate the process of a specific media image of the President coming into existence. The approach to the analyzed content from the perspective of intercultural communication is also of importance. It must be...
Executive orders in the US political system
Bui Thuy, Hanh ; Kotábová, Věra (advisor) ; Brunclík, Miloš (referee)
During the formative years of the American political system, the presidency has adopted so called unilateral tools, by which the President is able to enforce his agenda without the need of consent from the Congress or judiciary court. However, these tools are not written in the Constitution and their amount and means of usage has changed throughout time. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to study the factors that have caused these changes, specifically the unilateral tool of executive orders. The thesis analyses executive orders issued by the current president of the United States, Barack Obama, whose governing tenure is often characterized by frequent use of executive orders. It also examines whether and how these executive orders can be evaluated from the perspective of the Constitution. The result of the thesis serves as an introduction to the issue of these controversial presidential acts with the need of further study within the complexity of the American political system.

US President and his relation with media
Vránová, Kateřina ; Kotábová, Věra (advisor) ; Váňa, Tomáš (referee)
The text deals with the relationship between the media and the President of the United States of America. During the twentieth century, the president becomes the most visible part of the American political system. At the expense of the Congress, he takes on more initiative and becomes more active. Consequently in this area the role of the media increases because they inform the public about activities of the President. Public relations appear as a new aspect of the presidency. It is then up to each president how to deal with this new role. This thesis deals with various aspects of the relationship between the president and the media. It focuses on the communication means between White House and reporters and the strategy of this communication. In addition, it also explores the subsequent influence that media have on public opinion regarding the president and his public support and evaluation. This knowledge is then practically applied to the case of President Barack Obama.
Aspects of the relationship of the U.S. president with the American public
Gottwaldová, Petra ; Kotábová, Věra (advisor) ; Váňa, Tomáš (referee)
This thesis deals with the mutual relationship of the U.S. president with American public. Within this theme I investigate the ways in which the public expresses its opinion of the president, and which factors and issues influence presidential public ratings. Further, I analyze the relationship of the president with the public from the other side - it means communication strategies which the president employs in order to gain support of public opinion. An essential part of public relations is focusing public attention on a concrete issue of the president's agenda and subsequent framing of public debate about it. Through this process, the president can determine preferences which the public uses during their evaluation of the president's job. The media play an important role in forming public opinion, therefore my thesis deals with the president's approach to the media and with his communication with them as well. From the view of the Rottinghaus's theory of public opinion leadership, I analyze particular methods of presidential public relations and their potential influence on the growth of public support. The last point of my thesis is the role of the public support in the policy-making process, particularly in promoting presidential proposals in Congress, and also in a situation when the...
Evaluation of the results of the campaign Counter Terror with Justice - Obama and his broken promise
Husárová, Denisa ; Zemanová, Štěpánka (advisor) ; Trávníčková, Zuzana (referee)
On the particular example of the US new motto of the foreign policy after 9/11 --War on Terror I am trying to refer to the work of the non-profit organization Amnesty International in the field of the international relations. I am pointing out its importance in the decision-making process of the political elites. My intention is to find the correlation between the persuasion of the American population in relation to its leadership or leaders based on the expressed promises in the election campaign. As the object of my work I have chosen the current US President - Barack Obama whose one of his five main promises declared in the campaign was to defeat the terrorism, detain and adequately punish the masterminds of attacks from the September 2001 for the committed crimes. This point comprises the significant change from the approach of his predecessor and so the closure of the Guantanamo military base as a symbol of modern torture and denial of human rights which serves as a detention camp for the suspects of terrorism for more than 14 years now. This was a daring commitment but he gained millions of supporters thanks to it. This option comprised the expectations of sophisticated solutions for tens of substantial issues, including meeting the objective of punishment of the terrorists and establishment of deterrent precedent for any other similar attempts. Obama failed to accomplish it.
